Space to Move. Memory to Create.

Forged from the Earth and beyond. Introducing Nitiwear, Inc., smart wearables, made from space-age technology that puts you in control. Formulated from the latest advancements in superelastic shape memory alloys, Niti technology unlocks unprecedented new properties for the footwear, apparel, textiles, and wearables industries.

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) such as nickel titanium (NiTi), are advanced materials that can remember shape and recover remarkable levels of deformation upon exposure to external stimuli including temperature change, applied force, or electrical currents. First popularized through small scale biomedical applications (mostly stents), and simple actuators (aerospace), the next generation of large scale SMA applications were first studied at NASA as part of the Mars Rover program, in order to solve extreme engineering challenges on future Martian missions.

Niti harnesses the same unique, emergent structural properties developed by NASA for tires on the Mars Fetch Rover - a marvel of engineering that produces soft, compliant tires which take practically zero permanent damage even on rocky terrain and are extremely energy efficient. Combined with microfilament and actuator elements, Niti bridges the gap between traditional textiles, programmable wearables, and functional SMA structure to blur the lines between structure and function.

In a tech world built on customization & anticipation of what to like next,

it’s time for the things that we wear to do the same.

NiTi Technology

Shape memory alloys are space age metals that demonstrate two unique, related properties. The first property is the “shape memory effect”, characterized by the capability of the material to be pre-programmed to a specific shape, deformed into a completely different configuration, and then with the application of heat or electricity, return to its exact original form on command. NASA is currently experimenting with its usage for special mechanisms and astronaut suits.

The second is superelasticity. In this state, instead of responding to temperature changes, the material can take on huge strains (“bending”) that are 100% recoverable with no permanent plastic deformation. Tires with this property can be forcibly crushed all the way down to the wheel, and take no damage whatsoever, springing back to their exact original form.

The use cases for this material within the apparel industry are practically limitless. A patented (pending) new approach to textiles and structure in designing and manufacturing shoes, clothing, and other wearables. A new era in fashion/function innovation.

Smart Fabrics

Nitinol might have properties that seem quite alien to some, but this unique metal was actually discovered and developed right here on Earth. In the future, longer-lasting and custom-fitting wearables can reduce waste by requiring fewer sizes and fits, delivering more value in a single item, and discarding wearables less frequently. A material that hardly degrades under normal conditions unlocks new potential for sustainability.
